Reading the The State of the Hispanic Caregiver White Paper taught me how I’m not ready to deal with my parents aging. But also seeing how my parents dealing with my grandmother’s. Making sure that they have everything they need. My grandmothers do not live with us but they do come to visit from time to time and stay for a long period of time. I try to help as much as I could when they are around. Taking them to their appointments or making sure they don’t walk around if I could give them a ride.
This article help me understand that a lot of the Latinos are not aware of what to do when they are dealing with a viejito. It gets really stressful at times and very emotional. I see my grandmother trying to do things that she probably could have done 10 years ago and now she can’t do as fast or without getting tired. There are not enough sources other than going to the doctor if they are not feeling well. There are not enough sources that help the caregiver deal with the emotional, stress or just the proper equipment or material to make the transition to dealing with the elder.
